In 1938, the Wonder State Bar Association was
formed with W. Harold Flowers being one of the
organizers. The name of the organization was
changed during the 1960’s to the Arkansas Black
Lawyers Association, with the advent of black
awareness. Finally, the association formally changed
its name to the W. Harold Flowers Law Society in
1981 to recognize and honor Harold Flowers for his
many years of service to the bar and on behalf of
human rights.
The Wonder State Bar Association is not the earliest
Arkansas black bar association, according to a 1901
Arkansas Gazette article. An article from the July
31, 1901 edition of the Gazette speaks well of the
organization and professionalism of the Arkansas
Colored State Bar Association more than 100 years
ago.
